Behind Brendon Sanger’s career day, the Owls (20-9) were able to hold off a rally by crosstown rival Lynn University in a 7-6 win, extending their winning streak to seven games.

Sanger, the freshman right fielder, finished the game scoring three runs, while going four for five at the plate with three RBI’s, falling just short of the cycle with a triple.

“I did not [know] until I heard the fans screaming the triple chant,” said Sanger, who was hitting .375 with 13 runs scored coming into the game. “That was kind of cool.”

The Owls pounced quickly to start the game, as left fielder Tyler Rocklein’s RBI double scored Sanger, who had reached on a single.

Sanger then returned the favor in the next inning, hitting a three-run homer to give FAU a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Lynn almost put a damper on Sanger’s spectacular night, however, as they began chipping away at the lead, scoring two in the third and one in the fourth to pull within two.

In the sixth inning, Lynn was able to overcome the deficit and take a 6-5 lead with a three-run homer by third baseman Sal Giardina Jr.

The advantage did not last long.

Owl catcher Mike Spano scored Sanger with an RBI fielder’s choice to tie it going into the seventh.

After relief pitcher Bo Logan pitched a shutout seventh inning, FAU scored the winning run on first baseman Mark Nelson’s RBI fielder’s choice that brought home shortstop Mitch Morales.

Forcing a double play to end the game in the ninth, Owls closer Hugh Adams recorded his ninth save of the season. Bo Logan received the win, improving his record to 2-0.

“I enjoy and respect the hell out of them,” said Owls coach John McCormack of playing Lynn. “I’m excited that we won.”

With the win, FAU now leads the all-time series against Lynn 14-3, and has not lost to the Fighting Knights since 1993.

FAU begins a three-game road series against Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
