So much for the sweep.

Taking on FIU in the last of a three-game series, the Owls (13-8) were blasted by the Golden Panthers, 12-1, on Sunday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Owls had won both Friday and Saturday’s games by scores of 6-0 and 6-5, respectively, but failed to win its eighth consecutive game over their rivals.

Although the Owls led 1-0 after the first inning, the game was effectively lost after a huge third inning by FIU.

In the third, the Golden Panthers sent 14 batters to the plate, accounting for 10 runs on six hits. FAU also recorded two errors during an inning that brought about two pitching changes.

FAU righty Jeremy Strawn, who took the loss, lasted just two innings, letting up six hits and five earned runs. Sophomore Bo Logan came on in relief of Strawn, but was pulled after two walks and a hit batsman.

Junior right-hander Kevin Alexander finally got FAU out of the inning, but the damage was irreparably done. FIU tacked on another two runs in the sixth, whereas the Owls were shut down as the contest was called after seven innings.

The Owls’ only run came via a home run by first baseman Mark Nelson. FAU totaled just six hits and had nearly as many errors (three).

No FAU player had more than one hit on a day the team suffered its most lopsided defeat of the season.

The Owls begin a three-game road series against Arkansas State on Friday, March 22. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
