In a move to show support for victims of Hurricane Maria, the Boca Raton House of Representatives passed a bill Friday standing in solidarity with Puerto Rico.

The symbolic bill, titled “House of Representatives Shows Support for Puerto Rico,” was authored by House member Kevin Buchanan, and co-sponsored by Bailey Jones, Marianne Alex, Adam Sturn, and Karina Cruz during their first meeting of the semester.

“It is estimated that there is about 90 billion in damages in Puerto Rico and thousands of houses gone,” Buchanan wrote in the bill.

Buchanan, a sophomore majoring in marketing and business management, saw what other organizations at FAU have done for the victims in Puerto Rico and decided the House should do something too.

“Passing a resolution like this one may seem small to help the issue,” Buchanan said. “But I feel it is important to do our part to bring attention to it because Puerto Rico still is suffering.”

The bill passed the House by a vote of 32 to 0. The next House meeting will be Jan. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the Boca House Chambers.
