First Subway Café in South Florida coming to FAU

FAU’s Boca campus will be the first in South Florida to taste what a new, upscale Subway Cafe’s got cooking.

Subway Café is a restaurant concept launched in Washington D.C. in 2008. It will feature higher-end furniture, hardwood floors and flat-screen TVs in a coffeehouse type of environment. The exact location hasn’t been announced yet, but the Sun Sentinel reported it will be near the football stadium. The new store will also seat 70 customers in a 3,400-square-foot space.

“Customers can still get the traditional sandwiches they know at these stores,” Subway Development Corp. chief executive, Larry Feldman told the Sentinel. “But we’ve created a nice environment where people can come to relax.”

The concept is not entirely new to Florida.  The first store opened in Tallahassee and another in Gainesville in 2011. The Gainesville Subway Café has a “Starbucks-like atmosphere,” Zoe Haraden, a partner of the Subway Café told  The Gainesville Sun.

Besides the traditional subs, the menu at FAU’s Subway Café will include paninis, baked goods, salads and espresso-based beverages.

The UP will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

The Subway Cafe is actually physically connected to the south end of the stadium. You can literally walk over right now and look at where the restaurant will be. In doing this, Subway joins McDonald’s, Wendy’s and a number of other fast food restaurants that are trying to “grow up” by creating a “Starbucks-style” atmosphere. They believe you’re more likely to hang out longer if it’s a “coffee-house” atmosphere, do your work using free Wi-fi and buy more food.
