Hurricane Season Begins June 1; Update Info Now

The 2009 hurricane season officially begins on June 1. Should a hurricane approach any FAU campus this year, information will be available via:

– The FAU homepage, www.fau.edu
– University-wide emails
– The news media
– The new, University-wide, toll-free hotline:  1.888.8FAUOWL (832.8695). This number is in addition to the following campus hotlines, which will remain in effect:
– Boca Raton – 561.297.2020
– Jupiter – 561.799.8020
– Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale – 954.236.1800
– Treasure Coast, Harbor Branch -772.873.3330

Prior to, during and in the aftermath of a hurricane, the FAU homepage will offer information about campus closings and re-openings. New information will be posted on the hotlines and the homepage as required by changing conditions, and three times a day during a crisis situation. Additionally, the University will send a steady flow of news bulletins to all area television and radio stations as well as to local newspapers.

Hurricane guides are being distributed to students who reside on the Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses. The guide will also be posted on the Housing and Residential Life home page: http://www.fau.edu/housing/

Full information on preparing for and responding to hurricanes can be accessed on the Environmental Health and Safety website: http://www.fau.edu/facilities/ehs/  If you have questions, please contact Environmental Health and Safety at 561-297-3129.

At this time it is important for all members of the FAU community to make sure that their emergency contact information is fully updated. Please do that right now by going to the MyFAU homepage, clicking successively on “FAU Self-Service (OWLS),” “Personal Information,” “Update FAU Alert Telephone Numbers” and following the instructions.

IMPORTANT: The number of emergency contact telephone numbers each person is being asked to provide has been reduced from three to one in order to expedite the calling process and make it more efficient. If you are a faculty or staff member and you choose to list your work number, please give your own extension rather than the main number that serves your area. The only exception is for secretaries and receptionists who routinely answer the main number. Limiting your listing to your own extension will prevent multiple calls from going to the main number.

Thank you for your cooperation in updating your contact information. In case of an emergency, all components of the FAU Alert system will be activated, including emails, text messaging, the siren/PA system on the Boca Raton campus and telephone call-out messages. Safety remains the first priority at FAU.
