Myth: Can you play beer pong at a tailgate?

Before you get ready to set up the cups and clean the pong balls, grab a copy of the Student Code of Conduct and read the part on alcoholic beverages.

Updated in May 2008, the Student Code of Conduct states that drinking games are not allowed and that drinks must be served in cups (no kegs).

Tailgating activities also cannot “take up any parking space or impede traffic in any way,” states page four of the Code on drinking. This means no beer pong at tailgates, since pong tables can be car length.
“Last year we brought a party ball [small keg of beer] to a football tailgate for beer pong, and within 10 minutes of being there the cops came and confiscated it,” says Patrick Morehouse, a senior biology major. “The cops made us pour out the beer in front of them.”

Although these rules haven’t been updated in over a year, the rules still stand. Originally the Code of Conduct was updated so it is clear to students that drinking at a FAU related event is not allowed.
“We’ve played beer pong at a tailgate in the last year,” says Nikki White, a senior business administration major. “The cops can’t be everywhere and students are going to play drinking games.”

At press time Police Chief Lowe could not be reached for comment.

According to the Code, university sanctions will be taken through the Dean of Student Affairs and there is the potential of criminal charges with police.

Other strange drinking rules at FAU:

•    Two police officers must be present for an on-campus event with alcohol

•    Alcohol may only be served a maximum of four hours at any on-campus event

•    Only beer and wine are allowed, no hard liquor

•    Tailgates can only start three hours before an event

•    The FAU logo cannot promote the sale of alcohol

•    Alcohol cannot be a prize at an event

•    Any promotional flyer on or off campus cannot advertise the price of alcohol.
