Freshman Express Ride

It doesn’t take a nine-camera crew of sweaty guys and a bunch of microphones to document your life “Real World” style. All it takes is a pen and paper (or a laptop) and a little imagination.

That’s exactly what I got to do for the 32 weeks of my freshman year, as I blogged about my life as a freshman every week for the University Press as a little experiment.

From my coming to terms in gaining the Freshman 15 (the unwanted weight you inevitably put on after your freshman year of college) to my eternal hate of the first semester’s schedule.

From my newfound love of the Owls after attending a football game to my advice on how to avoid laundry, I covered anything and everything a freshman could possibly go through.

So now it’s my turn to pass all my knowledge to you – the new generation of FAU Owls who will be found passed out at a college party within the first week of school.

These following excerpts are for you to take in as advice from a former freshman.

Sept. 2, 2007College Social Life 1101

“…the best way to meet people is getting involved. I can honestly say that joining the University Press and getting involved in general have been the best things I could have ever done as a freshman. Not only has it made the transition from high school to college easier, but I’ve met a lot of great people and haven’t felt as alone as I thought I would.”

Sept. 15, 2007Let’s Go Owls, Let’s Go!

“I had never been to a football game before – a college football game, that is – and I admit that going in the stadium, I had no idea of what to expect. For the first time in my life I experienced a real football game. There were cameras, photographers, free T-shirts, big screens. I mean, it was the real deal.”

March 23, 2008Bathing Suits and Underwear

“… to avoid washing so many pairs of jeans more than twice a week, put a dryer sheet in your pocket and carry it throughout the day. It’ll give your jeans that freshly washed scent and it’ll allow you to wear them more times during the week.”

April 20, 2008Freshman Experience

“I have learned an array of things this year, like: not to stress out so much about classes, that MyFAU works only during office hours, and that walking down the Breezeway in the middle of “rush hour” (typically around 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m.) is practically impossible.”

April 27, 2008Goodbye to the Freshman

“I also learned that Outtakes and Coyote Jack’s are the CVS on campus – being the only places open until 10 p.m. during the week where you can get anything from mozzarella sticks to Smirnoff.”
