FAU Sets World Record – Unofficially

FAU tried to set a Guinness World Record for the largest human support ribbon in early November. Nearly 500 students, faculty and staff showed up to the Boca campus to participate in the giant ribbon and support organ and tissue donation, but paperwork is holding up the official designation.

So event coordinator Jose Herrera says FAU holds the “unofficial” record for the largest human ribbon, previously held by the University of Central Florida for 300 students in 2003.

The ribbon was part of the “Set a Record, Save a Life” event sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement and Service, FAU’s volunteer center. The ribbon event also promoted organ and tissue donation, and nearly 200 students signed up to become organ donors.

“We don’t know if we made the book until Guinness gets back to us,” says Herrera, who submitted two CDs of photos and 55 pages of detailed documentation in early December. “All of the paperwork must be perfect or we’re not official.”

The Guinness World Records Management Team emailed Herrera that “due to the vast quantity of claims … it can take up to eight weeks for [the] claim to be reviewed.” In this case, Herrera hopes to hear back from the team by early February.
