BOCA RATON, FL (November 9, 2006) -Homecoming Carnival at MacArthur Campus – On October 24th, Homecoming Carnival took place. It was everything the excited students anticipated. An estimate of 500 people attended the event, and were able to take advantage of the wonderful activities put together by their Program Board. Students seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the catered BBQ Dinner with carnival themed desserts, sticking to the walls of the inflatable Velcro wall, playing numerous rounds of Bingo and winning awesome prizes. Additionally, everyone loved all the FAU Homecoming outfits.

Enviro Club, Different Strokes, Basketball Club and many other clubs on the MacArthur Campus were very enthusiastic in providing carnival activities and games for the students. It was an overall success and from what students have said, it was a vast improvement from last year!

Day for Darfur – The FAU chapter of Amnesty International held 7 days and 7 ways to change the world events which included Unite for Darfur on Wednesday October 25th. Farid Hamidzadeh, SGA Chief Justice was among the speakers and gave a touching speech on realization of humanity through interpretation of religion in a manner which does not contradict its fundamental values. He touched on the importance of education, tolerance, respect, and freedom of opposition in reaching world peace.

Boca Raton Senate – On Thursday October 26th, the Student Senate lifted a constraining rider from the 06-07 budget. Prior to Thursday, student clubs were burdened by a clause that only allowed for 15% of their total budget to be spent on food.

Furthermore, that same rider detailed that the 15% for food can only be allowed for specific events. As a result of many student requests, the Senate re-legislated the rider. The new rider has allowed for 25% of a club’s budget to be spent on food.

Moreover, the new clause has no limitations concerning the type of event. This is a great example of SGA amending the budget to accommodate the students.

Talon Awards – Additionally, Student Government officials attended the “Talon Leadership Awards” Ceremony and Reception organized by the National Alumni Association and SG Homecoming Committee. It united alumni, students, campus and community leaders in a celebration of leadership, support and service to Florida Atlantic University.

A Celebration of Leadership President’s Talon Award Richard J. Staller, D.D.S. Alumni Talon Award Mary S. Brandenburg ’72, ’80 Pat. H. Patterson, Jr. ’76, ’78 Frederick C. Brummer ’68, ’74 Faculty Talon Award Eric Shaw Student Talon Award Lina Ortega Michele Rios

Homecoming Football Game – On October 28th at Lockhart Stadium, Student Government was awarded second place in the Golf cart parade. GO Boca Student Government, your school spirit made us very proud. SGA Program Board and the Homecoming Committee were very successful at their respective tailgates. They did a good job entertaining and handing out giveaways to the students.

Congratulations to Brianna Bragg and Johnathan Styles, our newly crowned 2006 Homecoming Queen and King!!!

Readership Program – Students have commented that they are happy to be receiving their USA Today, New York Times, Palm Beach Post and Sun Sentinel newspapers FREE due to the efforts of Student Government.
