Whats New at FAU

FAU scientist finds cancer treatment:æ
Dr. Herbert Weissbach has found a new treatment that may one day help cure skin cancer. “CHS Resources will develop and ultimately commercialize patent pending technology for the treatment of skin cancer,” according to a June 21 press release.

Tuition raise:æ
Tuition has once again been raised, this time by 3 percent for undergraduates, by the Board of Trustees. Part of the money will be going towards a faculty and staff pay raise that occurred last year, according to Dr. Ken Jessell, vice president of finance.
æ College of Nursing opens new building:æ
On February 22 the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing officially received a new building.æThe building “houses an auditorium, classroom and seminar space, offices for staff and faculty, in addition to specifically designed spaces for students and the community, including a holistic practice area, sacred space for contemplation and self-renewal, and a healing labyrinth garden,” according to the FAU press release.

New Non-Discrimination Policy:
The Board of Trustees approved a new anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy to include gays.æThis policy allows the Equal Opportunity Programs Office to investigate any harassment complaints based on “race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age or disability” according to the BOT’s proposal.æA central Pennsylvania online newspaper, CentreDaily.com reported the new policy now includes “any other basis protected by law.” This now “improves the procedures for complaint filing and investigation,” according to the proposal.

T-3 building burned down:æ
One of the few buildings that was used as barracks during WWII burned down on May 16.æ FAU was once an Army Air Field base and the leftover buildings have since been used as warehouses, according to a June 1 University Press article.æ The T-3 building had been renovated only 10 days before lightning struck a nearby transformer and set the building on fire.
