Fau Recreation

As a new student at a Division I athletic school you are probably wondering “what I can do to stay in shape and make friends if I don’t play on an athletic scholarship with FAU?”

Good news for new Owls students: the college provides a large number of intramural sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball, table tennis, and even a dodge ball tournament. Even if there aren’t enough students to field a team, FAU has a system that will pair you up with similar students. The benefit of this is meeting new people in a very relaxed situation through sports.

ææææDax Kuykendall works for FAU Campus Recreation, his knowledge and know-how will lead you through the toughest part of the intramural process: registration. He can be reached at: [email protected]æAnother name you should become familiar with is Eric Hawkes, assistant director of Campus Recreation. Hawkes says his department oversees theæsports clubs at FAU acting as the liason between the clubs and Student Government Association. He says that campus recreation has the ability and the means to meet club sports situations effectively.

“Campus recreation is really more a resource for sports clubs. As a club they’re really more responsible for making their club asægreat or as average as they want to be,” says Hawkes.

According to FAU’s campus recreation website: www.fau.edu/campusrec/club/index.htm, theæclub sports program promotes student participation in a variety of physical and athletic activities allowing students to engage in the activity of their choice at various skill levels. The emphasis of sports clubs is on leadership and student development and its success is dependent upon student interest and involvement. Clubs are open to men and women of all skill levels.
