Racism in a cone

When Leslie Bates showed up at his office on Monday morning, the Dean of Students looked outside his window and saw the word “nigger” written on it – in ice cream.

“The police think it was done with a drumstick ice cream cone, like the kind you buy in the Breezeway,” Bates said.

He was more shocked than upset.

“I’m not even mad at them … This is very surprising, this is the first time [at FAU] I’ve seen any racial animosity,” Bates said. “At least they spelled it right. It shows they’re getting a quality education at FAU.”He added: “This an anomaly, this is not FAU.”

Lawrence Davenport, FAU’s chief operating officer, saw the window and remarked, “Someone seems to have too much time on their hands, and limited intelligence.” Bates believes the ice-cream creative writing was done by a “disgruntled student who is mad at me.” Bates rules on many issues that affect Student Government, the greek system and student activities.

FAU police are investigating, and Lt. Chuck Aurin said they have already identified “persons of interest.”

“FAU has a zero-tolerance policy for this sort of thing,” Aurin said. Anyone with information about the ice-cream racist can call FAU police at 561-297-3500.
