Defending more than just a title

After the year long branding process that FAU concluded on Feb. 28 (to achieve a uniform nickname, uniform colors, and three identifiable marks and logo) the FAU Blue Wave will have to surrender its name, but not its rich history, at the end of the season to the Owls.

Over the past six seasons, FAU has been invited to play in five NCAA Regional events, which is the first step in trying to win the College World Series. Only one of those five invites was through an automatic bid, which was last year when they won their conference championship.

With a 33-20 record this year, FAU can expect to be invited to the NCAA Regional tournament for the sixth time. However, they first had to focus their attention on the conference tournament.

The Blue Wave entered the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as the no. 2 seed after sweeping a double header over Georgia State, who they also faced in the first round. The tournament took place from May 25-28 in DeLand, Florida at the home stadium of conference foe Stetson.

FAU did not visit Stetson this year, but won the conference championship there last year.

FAU has faced Georgia State three times this season, winning those three games 16-6, 7-3 and 6-4, all of them played in Atlanta.

The regular season champion and no. 1 seed in the tournament is Troy. FAU didn’t fare well against the Trojans in the regular season, losing two games, both by ten runs.

After the Atlantic Sun Tournament is the NCAA Regional, which is scheduled for June 3-5. The location of the tournament will be determined by the NCAA and will be based on the participating teams’ home stadiums seating capacity and availability, among other factors.

One location has already struck out and that’s FAU. The NCAA determined that the seating capacity at FAU is not enough to host a tournament. The past two years, FAU has drawn a spot in the regional hosted by the Miami Hurricanes, losing both times.
