Dear Editor,
This is in response to your article “The working man’s a sucker”. I think that this article was completely inappropriate for a university to run. I do understand it’s on the opinion page. Being a university paper I feel that the message of this page should be a positive one that motivates students to work hard to achieve their goals.
What kind of message did this send to under motivated students? Work sucks?
I pulled a few lines from the article that I though you may want to read over a second time:
“The point is, work sucks no matter what you do for a living; that’s why it’s called “work.” If it was supposed to be fun, they’d call it “play.”
So, be miserable at work- you’re supposed to be. It’s the American way.”
This is certainly not the case and is by no means the American Way. Many people enjoy what they do. For example if Marc enjoyed writing this article and indeed becomes a columnist wouldn’t that prove that his whole point is bogus?
I understand he is working in a restaurant but that’s were you start. Nobody was born with the knowledge and motivation to become successful that’s why we all go to FAU for an education because we want to have a job we love. When you first get hired for any job you always start at the bottom of the barrel and you work hard to achieve your goals, that is the American Way.
Another approach to the article could have been if you hate working for someone, be an entrepreneur and go out and make yourself successful and let the people that hate work like Marc work for you and make you money.
I hope that the next time an article like this comes across your desk you steer the student writer in a more positive direction.
Thank you for your time
Concerned student
