Student Body President / Vice President

STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT

Brent Dell, JuniorMajor: Political Science and Psychology

Give a brief biography of yourself – where you’re from, what your interests outside SG are, etc.I consider myself an honest, hardworking individual who thrives on experience. Therefore I have held a number of jobs that assist me in my day-to-day activities in SG. Outside of Student Government I play a number of sports ranging from basketball, volleyball and swimming.

Why are you seeking office at this time?I originally sought office because I noticed a misuse of funds on the MacArthur campus. I really want to correct that. I then noticed a way I could improve the partner campus relationship by becoming the Vice President and now I believe that I am the best candidate for the presidency because of my experience and drive.

Name three things that are not functioning properly in SG and list what you would do to correct them.1. Quicker student reimbursements for students who pay out of pocket to make great events happen – fiscal assistant in controller’s office and online SSI forms.2. Maintaining a good relationship with the partner campuses by meetings, luncheons and effective communication.3. Dissemination of information to the students of FAU through clubs and organizations on campus.

What are the major issues concerning your platform?Fiscal responsibility – knowing where every dollar goes; reaching out to our students, clubs and FAU community; addressing student concerns promptly

If you were to attain an elected position, what issue would be personally of utmost importance to you?All of our platform issues are extremely important, but I believe by keeping the students informed about what everyone is doing we will show our fiscal responsibility.

List any leadership experience you have and why you feel it makes you a viable candidate.Student Body Vice President, Student Body Governor, Program Board Assistant, and I have accrued over 400 community service hours at FAU. I secured $20,000 for the book voucher program, and SG will be able to give $30,000 in scholarships next year, which has never happened before. I initiated a child safety seat program, which provides seats for mothers and fathers who can’t afford them, and self-defense classes for students.

Alvira Khan, JuniorMajor: Political Science

Give a brief biography of yourself – where you’re from, what your interests outside SG are, etc.I was born in Bristol, England. My mother is from an island called La Reunion (in the Indian Ocean), therefore I speak French. I have lived in many places throughout my life; from Santa Barbara, California to Nice, France. I love sports, especially soccer, American football and martial arts. I also enjoy running and rollerblading. I especially love learning about other cultures and traditions as well as my own.

Why are you seeking office at this time?I am seeking office at this time because I want to continue to represent the students by being an advocate of their concerns and issues. It is essentially important that we have a leader that can put the students’ concerns first, as well as bring ethics, morality, and values to this office. I will strive to lift the bar of what Student Government can do for the students, and the university, as well as of course be a worthy leader for this distinguished university and its community of learners.

Name three things that are not functioning properly in SG and list what you would do to correct them.I would rather refrain from commenting on what is not functioning properly in SG and be more concerned about how we can possibly make Student Government more effective. By keeping the students’ interests close to heart, I feel that future goals and objectives can be easily achieved. Communication is always an important factor in the success of Student Government and must be more readily pursued. Having a procedural manual for clubs and organizations to follow could possibly enhance the functionality of Student Government today. Lastly, I feel that it is imperative as a governing body that represents the students, to step back, and look at the overall picture before taking possible drastic measures that could cause more harm than good.

What are the major issues concerning your platform? Some of the major issues concerning my platform include expanding the Violence Awareness Program, making sure there is greater accountability of SG funds, enhancing campus recreation programs, expanding Greek life on campus, and enhancing campus life for on campus and off campus students.

If you were to attain an elected position, what issue would be personally of utmost importance to you?I don’t think that you can have just one issue that is of utmost importance as I believe many of the issues I wish to address are greatly important; however, having said that, one issue that is close to my heart is the Campus Taskforce, which is dealing with Violence Awareness, preventing sexual abuse, and date rape at Florida Atlantic University. This program was started this year, from the Boca Raton Student Government, and I would like to see it further flourish, and expand. Even if one rape is prevented, that is a moral victory for each and every one of us.

List any leadership experience you have and why you feel it makes you a viable candidate. My Student Government experience commenced in 2001-2002 academic year when I was given the opportunity to be the University Wide Council Representative of the Boca Raton Campus through leave-in replacement. I then moved onto the Boca Raton Senate, where I was an active member of the legislative branch for approximately 8 months. In the spring 2003, I was proud to be elected to the Student Budget Committee (SBC) of the Boca Raton Senate, and was privileged to become the SBC Chair. I was elected in the spring of 2003 as the Boca Raton Governor and am currently holding the position. Outside of Student Government, I am an active member to many clubs and organizations, including holding high executive positions over my time at Florida Atlantic University. I have done whatever possible to represent the students of the Boca Raton campus in every way possible, in the means of lobbying to administration, making decisive decisions, and wholeheartedly supporting student services to the highest level. I try to be in every sense of the word, a person of the people, by showing compassion, ethics, morality, and a dedication to the students that I represent. I am a voting member of the University Wide Council and throughout my time on this council, I have tried my best to support legislation on the University Wide level that will greater benefit this University and the students of all campuses. I feel that I am a viable candidate for Student Body President, due to my compassion, dedication, and determination to make this Student Government reach new, and improved heights. I will continue to represent the students, by making sure their voices are heard, bringing greater traditions, and different perspectives to Student Government, and the University as a whole.
