TOP 5 FLICKS: Date Movies

1. High Fidelity Rob Gordon (John Cusack) is an ex-DJ who owns a record store. A compulsive list-maker, he recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress.

UP Says — A funny and insightful look at relationships, this film is the inspiration for our own “Top 5” lists of best flicks.

Classic Quote — “Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”

2. Pretty Woman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a cold-hearted businessman who requires the company of an escort for some social events, so he hires Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a beautiful prostitute. When these two opposites attract, they unsuspectingly fall in love.

UP Says — This is the defining romantic comedy of the 90s. It officially crowned Julia Roberts the “Queen of Romantic Comedies” after her roles in Steel Magnolias and Mystic Pizza. She spent the next 12 years trying to get audiences to take her seriously before finally winning an Oscar for 2000’s Erin Brockovich.

Classic Quote — “You and I are such similar creatures, Vivian. We both screw people for money.”

3. When Harry Met Sally The question is: Can two friends sleep together and still be friends in the morning? The title characters (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) have known each other for years and are afraid that sex might ruin their friendship.

UP Says — If you have that one “special friend” of the opposite sex whom you always wonder about (we all do), this flick and a few glasses of wine should be enough to advance the relationship to a whole new level.

Classic Quote — “I’ll have what she’s having.”

4. Ghost After being killed, Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is allowed to remain on Earth as a ghost until his surviving lover Molly (Demi Moore) is out of danger. He is forced to channel through a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg) who didn’t know that her powers were authentic until now.

UP Says was a huge success both critically and at the box office. It is possibly the most spoofed film of the 90s, but beyond that it’s a truly powerful story of love and self-discovery. You will believe.

Classic Quote — “Ditto.”

5. The Princess Bride It’s a classic fairy tale that pits good against evil in a heartwarming story of love and adventure. Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) have found true love; not even death can keep them apart.

UP Says — This one has it all – swords, pirates, princesses, magic, and even some kissing. The guys will enjoy the action, while the girls will melt when the hero risks everything to be with his true love. In a word, perfect!

Classic Quote — “As you wish.”
