BROWARD CAMPUSES (SEA TECH, COMMERCIAL, DAVIE)


Counseling services — Psychological counseling services are provided, at no charge, to students attending the Broward campuses. The professionally trained staff seeks to assist students with a wide range of personal concerns and problems. Students receive help dealing with issues such as test anxiety, stress, procrastination, poor assertiveness, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, childhood sexual abuse, and sexual assault. Couples and family counseling are also available at no charge, as long as an enrolled FAU student is an active participant in the sessions. Group counseling and psychological testing services are also provided when appropriate. Counseling at the center is held in strictest confidence, in keeping with accepted professional practices and Florida statutes. Appointments (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some evening hours also available) may be made in person at the Counseling Center located in Modular 38-I on the Davie campus or by calling 954/236-1216.

Wellness Center — FAU’s Student Wellness Center, located on the Davie campus between the Liberal Arts Building and library, is open Monday through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center’s goal is to provide highly specialized exercise programs for all members. Membership is free to all students.

Basketball Tournament — The three-on-three basketball tournament will be open for entries beginning Friday, Nov. 1 until Monday, Dec. 2. Entries are free and include the men’s and women’s divisions. Mayan Workshop — Supported by the Ann Adams Maya Studies Grant, the department of Anthropology and Arts and Letters introduces “Warfare and Ritual at Yaxchilan,” presented by Dr. J. Kathryn Jossarand and Dr. Nicholas A. Hopkins of Florida State University. The lecture will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in SO 250 with a reception following in SO 190. Saturday, Nov. 2

Mayan Workshop — Supported by the Ann Adams Maya Studies Grant, the department of Anthropology and Arts and Letters introduces a short course on Maya Hieroglyphic Writing presented by Dr. J. Kathryn Jossarand and Dr. Nicholas A. Hopkins of Florida State University from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in SO 190/207. The workshop sessions will combine guided instruction with hands-on analysis of hieroglyphic texts discovered at the Classical Period Maya site of Yaxchilan. All participants will receive a workbook that presents and discusses the materials covered and includes reference material on hieroglyphic writing and the Maya calendar, as well as illustrations of major monuments and texts. Workshops are free for all registered college students. Cost for non-students is $40 and includes all workshop materials. Space is limited and advance registration is suggested. Choosing A Major — Having trouble deciding on a major career? Library Workshop — The S.E. Wimberly Library is offering a Basic Research Strategies Workshop at 11 a.m. This is a hands-on workshop that shows how to do basic library research using the WebLUIS catalog and electronic databases. Judaism Workshop — Understanding Jewish Beliefs and Rituals is a special learning experience of basic Judaism offered with the cooperation of Hillel. At the Movies with Mr. Thomas — This organization is an informal monthly evening of pizza and musically relevant movie watching excitement. This month the musical being viewed is Into the Woods – an absolutely hysterical movie version of the stage production by Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim. Come by HU 247 at 7 p.m. to have pizza since it is prohibited to eat in the classrooms. The movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Pizza costs $5 on the Tuesday prior to each movie day. Stuttering Support Group — The Stuttering Support Group offers support to people who stutter or parents and professionals interested in the field of stuttering. Frontiers of Science — “Life and Death: Understanding the Death of Massive Stars and Our Cosmic Origins,” a Frontiers in Science Lecture, will be given by Dr. Anthony Mezzacappa of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This lecture will be held in the BC building at 4 p.m.

Senate Meeting — The Senate will be meeting 4:30 p.m. at the New Senate Chambers.

Gay/Straight Alliance — Lambda United will be having a business meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Majestic Palm Room in the University Center. Stay afterwards for the Religion and Spirituality Panel Discussion. Discuss and learn about several different GLBT and/or GLBT friendly religions.
