FAU Establishes Eminent Scholar Chair in Turkish Studies

FAU’s establishment of the Kenan Evren Eminent Scholar Chair in Turkish Studies, will provide a new level of international learning opportunities for FAU students. The academic chair is named in honor of General Kenan Evren, the seventh president of Turkey. The Fort Lauderdale-based Turkish American Business, Education and Cultural Development Organization (TABEC) was instrumental in assisting FAU obtain funding for the position.

The Chair will be housed in the International Business Program of the College of Business, and is designed to focus on the understanding of developing international economic and business theories and practices, while strengthening the university’s programs in history, political science and economics. It will also allow FAU students to learn about the culture and traditions of Turkey.

General Evren was president of Turkey from 1983 to 1989. During his tenure, he helped strengthen the political and economic relationships between Turkey and the United States. He also restored democratic elections to Turkey, which has historically been Israel’s strongest ally in the Middle East. A highly decorated military leader, General Evren has also been honored with the Outstanding Performance medal by the Turkish Armed Forces, the Legion of Merit award by the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath by England’s Queen Elizabeth II.
