Florida Atlantic’s Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions is hosting Share Sistrunk: The Megaphone, this Saturday, Aug. 29.

Sistrunk is an area of Fort Lauderdale known for its unstable community.

CUES has teamed up with Fort Lauderdale’s Community Redevelopment Agency in efforts to “facilitate social and physical change … to increase the sense of community and celebrate local heritage,” said Tyler Peter, the project’s social media coordinator.

According to the Share Sistrunk Facebook page, “The Megaphone is a shipping container re-purposed to work as an amplifier for the voice of the Sistrunk community.”

The event will be held from noon until 9 p.m. on Sistrunk Boulevard and will showcase Southern food and music alongside art workshops, storytelling and more.

Project lead and adjunct CUES professor Sherryl Muriente has worked under CUES to collect stories of people in the area.

“There are art groups brewing in the neighborhood; we want a shift in perception of this place,” said Muriente.

“[Share Sistrunk] showcases stories to share them to the outside world,” continued Muriente. “It’ll create connections. There are a lot of non-for-profits and creative venues to express culture, but not everyone knows about each other.”

Muriente added, “It’ll be a great time. People have no idea what they’ve been missing.”
