Our Policies
Our Purpose
The University Press aims to report the truth and follows a code of ethics provided by the Society of Professional Journalists. Through reporting and research, we strive for ethical journalism to deliver accurate and reliable information to our readers. If we fall short, we encourage our readers to hold us accountable and request necessary corrections.
Corrections Policy (Updated August 2025)
Corrections are handled case by case. We review the issue, fact-check, and make any necessary updates. In the case of a correction, we’ll issue an editor’s note with an addition to the content, including details about the change. In rare cases, we may issue a formal apology.
Retractions
We don’t unpublish articles unless there’s solid proof it’s harmful or based on a lie. If there are mistakes, we’ll correct them with an editor’s note. To contact the editor-in-chief about a correction, email universitypress@gmail.com or contact the writer directly.
Name Removals
The same rules apply when an individual wants to remove their name after agreeing to be on the record with the reporter. Reporters must ask sources if they’re speaking on the record (can be quoted). Therefore, we do not remove names unless there is solid proof that it’s harmful or based on a lie.
Editorial Guidelines
Writers must not make up quotes, change facts, or mislead readers. We aim to report stories just as they happened. Writers must verify everything (names, dates, locations, and quotes) and have their story reviewed by two editors before it’s published. Writers are responsible for being accurate and backing up their reporting with reliable sources. Before a story is published, facts must be double-checked by writers and editors. Writers should keep proof of interviews, like recordings or screenshots.
Anonymous Sources
We only allow anonymous sources if being named could put someone at risk. These sources can only be used alongside at least three other named sources. Their information must be verified before it’s included.
Confidentiality
We do not share private information from the newsroom (like drafts, content plans, interviews, or internal discussions) without permission from the editor-in-chief.
Letters to the Editor
We welcome letters to the editor up to 300 words. They may be edited for clarity and length and must include the writer’s name and a phone number so we can confirm. Publication of the letter is up to the editor-in-chief’s discretion.
Guest Posts
We do not accept guest articles or promotional pieces. For advertising, contact us at universitypress@gmail.com or visit our Ad Shop through Flytedesk.
Social Media
We leave our comment sections open on our website and social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook. We never delete a comment because of disagreement. However, this decision is subject to change at the discretion of the journalists if comments threaten violence or expose personal information.
Distribution Policy
No University Press content may be distributed or republished without consent from the editor-in-chief. This rule applies to articles and photography. Use of the University Press trademarks, logos, or copyrights is not allowed without prior approval.
