On Aug. 18, the annual New Student Edition of the University Press was distributed on FAU’s Boca campus. While the UP staff worked very hard on this issue, a journalistic error was overlooked in the article about textbooks, titled “How much?!” (page 5).

I want to apologize on behalf of the University Press because that article was published with insufficient reporting, which contradicts a basic concept of journalism.

In the article, it may sound as if we suggest students use a copy machine in a Student Government office to copy textbook pages.

Our goal with that portion of the article was not to condone illegal activity but to point out that students do copy textbooks and do it often.

Further, the UP mentioned Student Government not to suggest the use of its copy machines but as merely an illustrative example intended to help define “on campus administrative job.” Student Government was chosen for that example, however, because the UP was informed from sources that such activity has happened there in the past and we have also personally witnessed such incidents.

In regards to our oversight, that portion of the “How much?!” article was removed before that article was posted on our Web site.

Students should know that the UP does not condone illegal behavior and that the copying of textbooks is against the law. Unfortunately, this does not mean that such illegal activity does not happen at FAU or any university.
