Owls snatch victory over Bethune-Cookman

On the fourth and final game of the Parents’ Weekend Tournament hosted by FAU, the Owls softball team sent moms and dads home satisfied with a win.

The Owls (17-13) sealed the victory over the Wildcats (7-23) with a final score of 4-2. A solid offensive performance was given by sophomore first baseman Rose Gressley on Sunday March 15.

The Owls held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Gressley hit two runs batted in (RBIs) into centerfield. This extended the lead to 3-0. Gressley added her third RBI in the third inning when she hit another single to bring in junior shortstop Blair Bodenmiller. She also had a solid game defensively at first base, recording 12 putouts to help stifle the Wildcats.
“[Gressley] did a great job at the plate,” said head coach Joan Joyce.

Junior pitcher Kathryn Stauffer earned her fifth win of the season by only allowing three hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of play.

Senior infielder Caitlyn Bliss contributed by going one for two at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored. Junior outfielder Ambar Jones went one for three with a run scored.
“[Jones] did a great job for us with her speed on the bases,” said Joyce.

The Owls were playing against a weary Bethune-Cookman team that was playing the second game of a back-to-back doubleheader on a hot Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton. Wildcats pitcher Allison Garcia pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs to the Owls after pitching their previous game versus Purdue.
“Fatigue was definitely a factor for her because she was pitching all weekend,” coach
Joyce explains.

The Owls begin their Sun Belt Conference schedule in a two-game series against North Texas beginning on Saturday, March 21 at 6 p.m. in Boca Raton.
