Tuition increases translates to the butcher knife

I don’t know how many times in the past year I’ve read about tuition increases for FAU or for the state universities in general. If tuition actually went to offering more courses and better services, I wouldn’t mind it too much. But, here at FAU in Davie, that simply is not the case.

When I first started FAU in 2000, there were actually printed class schedules, and a wide variety of courses offered. That’s a thing of the past, especially if you are an English major. In fact, I’ve noticed a trend. Every time there is a tuition increase, FAU takes the butcher knife to the English department. Many courses have not been offered in four years, yet they still appear in the FAU catalog.

After graduating in December, I thought I would take a course during the summer or maybe the fall. During the summer, a total of three English courses are offered in Davie, one of which is writing for management, so that really doesn’t even count. That course is geared for Business majors, not English majors. The fall semester is just as bad. Does this not advertise “No English majors allowed on campus”? To make matters even worse, the majority of the classes are held during the day, even though Davie is 100 percent non-traditional. This means we won’t be able to take the few courses that are offered because we can’t afford to quit our jobs.

In fact, if I want to take a course, whether at the undergraduate or graduate level, I have to take a correspondence course through UF. They offer 30 courses online alone in English, so we can just imagine how many are offered on campus.
