All decisions that ultimately affect the school are put through the Board of Trustees. They’re responsible for “policy decisions appropriate to the university’s mission, the implementation and maintenance of high-quality education programs, the measurement of performance, the reporting of information and the provision of input regarding state policy, budgeting, and education standards,” according to the board’s website. Six representatives are selected by the governor of the state, and five selected by the trustees. The other two spots are filled by the student body president and the president of FAU.

After starting in January 2014, President John Kelly worked to improve graduation rates, which returned approximately $3.5 million in state funding. He received a $16 million donation for the construction of a new athletics center that planned to have an indoor practice football field, weight room and academic center. His primary job is to oversee and plan for the growth and development of FAU. To do so, Kelly has developed a 10-year strategic plan to be the fastest growing research university.

This year’s student body president is none other than Kathryn Edmunds, a communication major and a sister of Phi Mu sorority. To the concerns of the students, Edmunds has one seat on the Board of Trustees. She will also be the chair of the University Budget and Appropriations Committee, responsible for allocating funds to various student organizations, such as the Homecoming Committee, the Veterans Center and the Campus Recreation Center. She also has the power to approve or veto any legislation put through the campus’ House of Representatives or the Senate.
