Ring 2

“Artists Weigh In”This ring showcases the works of several southeastern contemporary American artists and their reflections on the 2008 presidential campaign.

“Afro Abe II” by Sonya Clarke (2008). Made with a five dollar bill and thread.

“The Flying Carpet” by Pip Brant (2007). This carpet, intended to represent false promises, is built on the grill and bumper of a Dodge Ram. Designed with a map of the Middle East, the piece also has pedals that operate head and tail lights, and an electric motor that makes the work shake.

“Florida Weighs In” The first pieces of contributed art by professor Carol Prusa’s class. One wall in the gallery is dedicated solely to student art. Visitors are encouraged to contribute their own works.

“Untitled” by Kate Kretz (2008). Embroidery on A deconstructed flag.

“Wartime Knitting” by Sabrina Gschwandter (2007).This installation piece was made by Stitch for Senate – an “initiative of knit hobbyists” who knit imitation military helmet liners like the ones issued to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The liners are arranged on a wall in the seating chart of the United States Senate, with each bearing the name of a senator. All of the liners will be mailed to their respective senators after the completion of the exhibit. In front of the wall is an interactive knitting station with directions on how to knit helmet liners, body bags and slippers.
