Update (Oct. 13 at 9:30 p.m.) | This story’s headline and secondary headline have been updated to reflect police did not find any evidence of gunfire and the shooting was only suspected.

Update (Oct. 14 at 6:53 p.m.) | This story previously stated, “Police say there has been limited communication with the victim, but they were located in the food court area when the reported gunshots were fired.” The current version reflects that’s where the incident occurred, but it was not caused by reported gunshots.

Boca police received reports of a shooting at the Boca Town Center Mall Sunday afternoon. One man was injured with what police called “trauma wounds.” Police say the injury was caused by the victim fleeing the scene and hitting their head on a door.

Police say there has been limited communication with the victim, but they were located in the food court area when the incident occurred.

No weapons have been recovered at this time and police have not identified any gunfire or evidence such as shell casings or rounds, according to Police Chief Dan Alexander.

They are currently combing the scene with The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with police dogs.

The victim has since been transported to Delray Medical Center. As of Sunday evening, police say most people are cleared from the mall. There is no longer an active shooter and no suspects are currently in custody.

Alexander noted that officers were on duty at the mall and were able to secure the scene almost immediately.

Police expect minor injuries from shoppers from trips and falls as a number of people have evacuated the area. No other significant injuries have been reported yet.

Alexander warned the public to beware of misinformation online and to take what they see on social media “with a grain of salt.” Several videos have been posted online showing people fleeing the scene and blood on the floor.

Police said they are still reviewing footage and evidence to determine what prompted panic, but have not confirmed if it was a gunshot.

Police warned the public to stay away from the mall area, which is less than two miles from FAU.
