After months of proposed budget cuts, FAU finally approved the 2008-2009 operating budget.
The Board of Trustees – the 13-member group that oversees decision-making for the university – voted on Wednesday, June 25 to approve the new $249 million budget, which includes $9.6 million in cuts.
Here’s a look at the official cuts, effective as of July 1:
? Tuition increase of 6 percent – that’s $118.96 more per credit
? Course offerings will be consolidated, moving some classes from one campus to another and reducing sections of some classes
? Converting some administrative positions to classroom positions
? The school is cutting 134 jobs, 100 of which were vacant and just won’t be filled
? More adjunct instructors will be hired instead of full-time faculty
? The computer science and engineering programs in Davie will be eliminated
? Jupiter’s business program will be eliminated
? Travel and research support for faculty will be significantly reduced
? Reducing book purchasing budget for libraries
? Financial aid decrease of 8.6 percent
? The Small Business Development Center has been closed. This center offered professional expertise to small business owners and entrepreneurs to help them succeed in both the domestic and international marketplace.
? Drastically reduced funding for Student Government and clubs
