In case you don’t want to kill your brain cells watching The Incredible Hulk this summer, try distracting your brain in a more cultural way – see a play or musical.

FAU might seem like a ghost town over the summer, but believe it or not the theatre department still makes time to put together a few musicals and a play for students’ enjoyment. Although musical ticket prices are 15 bucks – a bit more than the average movie ticket price – it’s live entertainment, and a movie can’t beat that.

Now, just in case one musical isn’t enough to satisfy your thirst for drama through song, FAU gives students a chance to see two musicals. And if they aren’t exactly your bag, check out a play.

EvitaThe hit song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” comes to FAU – except instead of Madonna singing it, the role of Evita Perón will be played by Rebecca Simon, who is in the process of completing her MFA in acting at FAU.

Evita is a musical that follows the life of a poor struggling actress, Evita Perón, who marries the president of Argentina and becomes an icon for poor Argentinean people before her death at the age of 33.

Check out Evita July 11 to July 27 on the Boca campus. Buy tickets early at the FAU box office inside the Student Union.

Carousel If you think your summer job sucks, try being a carnival baker or a mill girl. Those are the jobs that the young characters from Carousel have to do. The musical, set in a small Maine village in the late 1800s, is about two young lovers who risk their future for their feelings and end up losing their plush jobs.

The couple has to battle poverty and the strain it puts on their relationship. Sounds like the average college relationship – except they do it while singing and dancing. The production also explores issues like domestic violence and social class.

Check out Carousel June 20 to July 5 on the Boca campus. Buy tickets early at the FAU box office inside the Student Union.

A Thurber CarnivalA Thurber Carnival is a play compilation of funny stories written by James Thurber. Thurber was a famous humorist who regularly contributed to the New Yorker during the 1930s and ’40s – like you didn’t know who he was.

The play, featuring sketches based on Thurber’s short stories and cartoons, is centered on the observations he made while growing up in Ohio.

Check out A Thurber Carnival June 28 to July 26 on the Boca campus. Buy tickets early at the FAU box office inside the Student Union.

FAU students, faculty, staff and alumni can purchase tickets for each summer production at $15 apiece.
