Social Work students save agencies money, gain work experience

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Salvation Army and Women in Distress all benefited from FAU volunteers. Students from the FAU’s School of Social Work logged in more than 75,000 hours in over 100 community based agencies this year. They volunteered in areas that range from Indian River to the Miami-Dade County.

Students of the School of Social Work are required to log in 400 internship hours within two semesters. This work is considered volunteer work. Michelle Hawkins, the director of the School of Social Work told FAU that “With the minimum going rate of $15 an hour for a social work professional, we are helping these agencies complete work they would otherwise not be able to afford.” But its not a one-way street. Hawkins pointed out that in order to get a job after FAU, students would need the experience.

The School of Social Work has been accredited since 1983 and has a four-year-old master’s program. The master’s program has seen its enrollment sky rocket from 20 students to 140.
