Students celebrate cultural diversity at Sundance Festival

Multicultural entertainment, good food, relaxed fun, and a diverse audience best describe the Sundance Festival, which was held Nov. 13 at the Live Oak Pavilion. The festival was a large-scale, culturally diverse event that was part of a series celebrating the inauguration of FAU President Frank Brogan.

Booths were set up by various student organizations, including the Muslim Student Organization, the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS), the Thailand Student Organization, the Multicultural Entrepreneurship Society, the Bahamian Student Association, Konbit Kreyol, the Students for Israel, and the Society for the Promotion of Indian Culture (SPICE). Each student organization provided information and souvenirs promoting their cultures.

Ethnic food and barbeque were offered at the outdoor stage, and table and tiki lights complemented the relaxed and friendly vibe of the night.

President Brogan took the time to attend the event, speak to students, take pictures and shake hands with people from the local community. Brogan also said a few words about the University and his plans for the future.

The Live Oak Pavilion was home to the all-night entertainment. San Tropez played calypso music, and the FAU Marching Owls drum line followed. Flamenco Del Sol and ALAS also performed.

Fireworks lit up the sky in the middle of the event, which gave the night a special touch. One of the most interesting performances was from Negro Gato, an Afro-Brazilian martial arts group. The various dances and music brought excitement to the evening.

About 1,000 people attended the Sundance Festival, which was arranged by Brogan’s administration and Student Government.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout,” said Director of Cultural Diversity Veronica Vargas.
