I would like to take the opportunity to respond to Sharon Rinkiewicz’s letter bemoaning the lack of an Honors program here at FAU. The Honors College in Jupiter offers upper division classes in a variety of subjects. Ms. Rinkiewicz says she is an American Literature major. Dr. Laura Barrett is an outstanding advisor for thesis projects and teaches many American Literature courses. Additionally, all Honors College students are required to produce a senior thesis. These theses are often well above the average senior theses produced at UF or Florida State. Also, in a conversation with a fellow student and one of my professors, my friend voiced disappointment at the fact that he believed he was not being challenged to the extent that students at other institutions were, in this instance, Cal-Berkley. The professor told this student that he truly believed that he was being challenged the way someone at Berkley would. The professor had been a student at Berkley. If Ms. Rinkiewicz really wants a challenge, she should make her way up to Jupiter. The Honors College is the “step in the right direction” that Ms. Rinkiewicz is asking for.
Sincerely,
Walker Hicken
