The FAU women’s soccer team (1-1-0) travelled to Coral Gables, Fla. to take on the Miami Hurricanes (1-0-0) Sunday evening, as they lost 1-0.

Senior midfielder Sammy Vitols took the first shot for the Owls in the 13th minute, but it was off target.

The first half was uneventful for both teams. No saves were made as there were no shots at goal despite three shots being taken from each side.

Fouls were frequent between the Owls and Hurricanes. Both sides combined for 11 fouls, with FAU having committed the most with six.

Miami broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, thanks to sophomore midfielder Katerina Molina kicking it past FAU’s freshman goalkeeper Amit Cohen to the top-left side of goal to give the Hurricanes the lead. Sophomore forward Gabriela Rusek was awarded the assist.

Graduate transfer forward Bri Austin made an effort to equalize for the Owls with back-to-back shots on target to the bottom-center of the goal. Unfortunately for her, Miami’s junior goalkeeper Melissa Dagenais kept those shots from going in.

Despite its efforts, FAU couldn’t score the game-tying goal due to Miami’s stout defense throughout the match.

The Owls return home to Boca Raton to host Loyola University at FAU Soccer Stadium on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. It will be broadcast on C-USA TV.
