Florida Atlantic women’s basketball defeated in-state rival Florida International for the second time this season with a 63-52 win on Saturday night.

The win marks FAU’s first victory on the road in conference play this season.

The Owls scoring was led by 16 points from redshirt senior guard Ali Gorrell. Junior forward Kat Wright was right behind Gorrell, notching 15 points of her own. She also recorded a career-high 10 rebounds.

With the win, the Owls (13-14, 4-11 Conference USA) have now won the last four games of this rivalry, and six of the last nine.

However, the team’s recent success against FIU doesn’t necessarily correlate to how FAU has performed of late. Though they have now won their last two games, the Owls lost 10 of their prior 11— all in conference — and currently sit in 11th place in the Conference USA standings.

The Golden Panthers (4-23, 2-14 Conference USA) sit in last place, a spot they’ve held since conference play began.

The Owls will look to keep their positive momentum rolling as they play their final two games of the regular season on Thursday, March 3, at Middle Tennessee and on Saturday, March 5, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
