No more traveling for home matches for the FAU Sand Volleyball team.

“The Beachy Burrow” — as coined by the Women’s Sand Volleyball team — will be the first sand courts home to FAU.

They will be located on the west side of campus, next to the track.

“We chose the site adjacent to the track in order to allow easy access for students to not only attend home events but also [to] utilize the facility,” said Executive Associate Athletic Director, Melissa Dawson.

The location makes it easily accessible for both students and players.

“This type of facility lends itself well to sharing with the Department of Campus Recreation so that all students can enjoy the courts during times when varsity practice and matches are not being played,” said Dawson.

For the past three seasons the Women’s Sand Volleyball team used facilities in Deerfield Beach. Players and supporters commute there for practices and home matches.

Having courts on campus will not only make it more convenient for players and fans to watch the games and practices. But, it will also mark a significant point in the program because these will be the first sand volleyball courts specifically for both the team and students.

Sand Volleyball has been at FAU for three years. The program began when the NCAA recognized it as an emerging sport.

In those three years, the team competed with other Division I colleges such as UNF, FGCU, and FIU.

“We’ve come so far in such a short period of time and it’s exciting to be able to show people that,” said junior defensive specialist, Chelsey Tekavec. “It makes us feel like we’re a true sport now.”

Tekavec has seen the progress of the program throughout her time at FAU, by virtue of being on the inaugural 2011 team.

The courts are expected to open mid to late February, just in time for the fourth season.

This will allow the first match to be played at FAU on March. 6.
