Fall fun

SPORTS

Last year, seven-on-seven flag football drew a considerable number of students.

Seventy-one teams comprising 833 students competed in four weeks of play, with an extra two weeks of playoffs. Because of the game’s popularity with FAU students, the regular season is being extended in the fall from four to six weeks before playoffs.

“We’re excited about it,” said Ben Sheu, graduate assistant of intramural sports.

FAU students are also excited about the change.

“Believe it or not, [the longer season] will make [flag football] a lot better — because that is the one complaint, about how the season is too short and there’s like only four games in the regular season,” said junior business economics major Dan Stern, who played flag football the past two years. “It would definitely make it a lot more fun.”

However, football isn’t the only thing planned for the fall season. Sports also scheduled include volleyball and inner tube water polo.

“We decided to add inner tube water polo to the fall schedule because people are really enjoying [it],” coordinator for sports and competition Kate Quinlan said of the sport that was first introduced during the summer B semester.

Another sport offered this fall is tennis. According to Quinlan, tennis in the past has only gotten one day of play in the fall schedule, with a lot of students being left out because of scheduling conflicts.

This year, tennis will have more days available, and it will be flexible to the students’ schedules. Students will get to play matches on their own time and report the scores when finished. Rental equipment will be available for students at the Rec Center.

“We just want people to be excited about the sports that are coming up, and we want them to come out and participate,” said Quinlan. “We want students to come play and have fun.”
