I’m dressed for success

Every semester James Watson organizes a career fair, and every time he turns students away for not dressing appropriately.
“[Students] are trying to make a lasting impression. Even if the résumé’s good, if one student’s dressed better than the other, the employer will hire the other student,” says Watson, coordinator of employer relations at FAU’s Career Development Center (CDC).

FAU’s Fall Career Day & Technical Fair hits the Boca campus on Sept. 17, when students can network with up to 84 employers. All students and alumni are welcome to attend the fair, located in the Boca Arena, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Employers are ready to fill positions for jobs, co-ops and internships in various fields.

If you’ve never been to a career fair and don’t know what to expect, you can check out Career Day 101 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Senate Chambers in the Boca Student Union from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The event advises students how to present themselves to a prospective employer.
“We see a lot of jeans and flip-flops,” says Watson.

According to Watson, the worst wardrobe he ever saw at a career fair was a girl who showed up wearing a dripping-wet bathing suit. To prevent situations like this, the CDC suggests students come dressed for a job interview.

Besides not knowing what to wear, Watson says another big problem students face is not doing their research on the companies.
“Students are unprepared to discuss what career they’re looking for.”

It’s important to know what the companies are looking for and how your skills and background fit the available positions, he adds.
