Close but oh so far

A chance at national recognition for the FAU baseball team quickly turned into a route by the University of Miami.

UM, ranked # 2 in the country, stomped FAU 13-6 in Boca on Wednesday night in a game that started off close, but ended with a score more respectable than the plays on the field.

“The way we played and the way we pitched was unacceptable,” Owls head coach John McCormack says.

FAU made two errors in the field and their pitchers combined to walk eight batters and allow 15 hits.

Freshman Brent Adheen got the start. He let up a quick three runs in the first inning, but shut the Hurricane batters down the next three innings. Once the fifth inning came around, the wheels fell off.

Adheen got into a bases-loaded, no-out jam to begin the fifth before being replaced by senior Chris Schmitt. UM put up 10 runs throughout the next three innings to put the game out of reach.

If the game were played by the World Baseball Classic rules, it would have been called after the seventh inning for the mercy rule because FAU was down 13-3.

FAU had just six hits, two of those coming from senior William Block. He homered in his first at bat, and doubled later in the game. He’s more concerned with the important conference series coming up on the schedule.

“This better not linger because we got to come out and play Friday,” Block says.

Louisiana-Monroe (12-10, 4-5 Sun Belt) comes to town to face the Owls (14-8, 3-5 Sun Belt) in a three-game weekend series starting Friday.

McCormack says the experience on this roster won’t allow this loss to loom over their heads in this weekend’s conference games.

“This team has always been resilient. It’s an older group of guys for the most part and these guys have a tendency to band together,” McCormack says.
