Staying Afloat: The FAU Sailing Club

The FAU Sailing Club isn’t letting budget cuts sink them. They travel almost every weekend.
The club competes as a team all over the state of Florida and even in New York. Competitions, known as regattas, bring 10 to 12 teams together to test their skills and to race one another.

In the spring of 2008, the FAU team placed in the top 36 of 250 schools nationwide.

The team currently has 10 members, which is a small team, acccording to Nick Muzia, a club member and a senior ocean engineering major.

Muzia enourages more students to join the Sailing Club because the team includes United States Sailing Association-certified coaches who “can teach beginners and bring them up to speed quickly,” says Muzia.

Only half of the current members had ever sailed before joining the club.

The Sailing Club meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. till sunset at the Sailing Harbor in Hollywood, Fla. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.fausailing.com.
