Spinning and Winning: The Ultimate Frisbee Club

When you think of Frisbee, don’t write it off as a leisurely beach sport or a game to be played with a dog in the park. The 2007 arrival of the Ultimate Frisbee Club to FAU has given a whole new meaning to the 6-ounce disc that is the Frisbee.

Ultimate Frisbee can best be described as a hybrid sport: one that combines the non-stop motion of soccer, the blocking techniques of basketball and the passing style of football.

The game is played by two teams each comprised of seven players, in which the objective is to score points by receiving a teammate’s pass in the opponent’s end zone.
Frisbee players enjoy the extreme cardio and leg workouts they get in each practice and game of ultimate, as the players call it.
“[Ultimate] is a very intense, yet relaxed sport which anyone from a die-hard athlete to a weekend warrior can come out and play,” says the club president, Mike Victor.

One of the biggest aims of the game is to build sportsmanship and honesty among the players.  The ultimate Frisbee tournaments have no referees so when a foul is committed the athletes themselves are responsible for calling it and solving any disputes that follow.

Ultimate has a low budget because virtually no equipment is needed.  Because of that, the club is able to gather the required funds for tournaments from the sports division of the Council of Student  Organizations (COSO), an organization that controls funding for clubs and teams at FAU.

The club leaders are clear that all members are unique when it comes to playing ability. Although some players have more experience than others, they all play well as a team.
But when asked about the club’s stars players, COSO representative J.C.  Lingelbach chuckles and  exclaims, “This guy Rundio, he’s an animal!  He’s always running around everywhere!”

Although new, the Ultimate Frisbee Club has had notable success. About 25 people come out to practice at the intramural field, next to the gym.  Players of all ages and fitness levels play pick-up games to help each other learn new passes, such as the traditional “overhand,” the forehand “flick” and the advanced “hammer.”

The Ultimate Frisbee Club has big plans for the coming months with the hope to be a traveling competitive team by next year, playing against such schools as the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida.
“It is a great way to meet people, get exercise, learn a new sport and have fun while doing it,” says Chris Bowen, the club’s vice president.

So the next time you are looking at a small plastic disc, whether the logo says Wham-O, Ron Jon’s or even FAU, pick it up and come out for an unforgettable experience.  And remember, you have entered the world of Frisbee, ultimately.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club practices on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 p.m. on the intramural field on the Boca campus. For more info, visit www.fauultimatefrisbee.com.
