Boca Raton FL – The Owls were dreaming for victory and then were upset when reality set it.
On a miracle shot by Western Kentucky’s Amy McNear, the Owls suffered a crushing defeating to the Lady Toppers 79-77. Jessica Knurick had a chance to put the game away heading to the line as FAU led by one point, but failed to convert both free throws resulting in the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers stealing the game away.
The Lady Toppers (9-6, 3-2 Sun Belt Conference) were led by McNear’s 21 points. She was 9-of-11 from the floor. Arnika Brown dominated the boards with 17 rebounds, and contributed with 18 points. In the all-time series, Western Kentucky has gone undefeated against the Owls in Sun Belt Conference play dating back to 2006. Previously, the Lady Toppers defeated the Golden Panthers on Wednesday, contributing to a sunshine state sweep.
For FAU this loss was especially bitter, as the Owls played a strong second half led by Breana Turner. Turner came off the bench and scored 16 points to help spark the Owls in the second half. As a team the Owls out shot the Lady Toppers 65.4 percent to 62.1 percent, but it wasn’t good enough. Brittany Bowe led the team with 21 points, and Carla Stubbs added 16 for FAU.
The Owls (4-11, 1-4 Sun Belt Conference) have now lost three straight conference games. FAU will try to shake off this loss as they prepare for “Bury the Burrow” at home as they take on the FIU Golden Panthers this Wednesday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
