Student Government Superlatives

Last year, the Boca House of Representatives voted on 39 bills. More than half involved spending student money; the rest were calls to action and to-do lists. Here’s a quick look at the most expensive and most supported bills in Student Government for ’08.

Best Dressed
BRHB-08-09: “Boca Raton Student Government Facelift”
Cost: $75,800

Who Benefited: Boca Student Government, Black Student Union & Multicultural Programs

Summary: This bill let SG kick off the fall semester with repainted offices, new carpeting and more furniture. It also gave the Student Union building a bit of money for remodeling some office spaces now occupied by the Council of Student Organizations, BSU and MP, and the orientation team. The bill justified the expense by saying, “Student Government leaders deserve a professional, clean and neat set of offices to help create a sense of pride and ownership over these spaces and demonstrate professionalism to the student body and general community.”

Most Likely to Succeed
BRHB-08-05: “A Time for Change: Promoting Tradition
at FAU”

Cost: $22,000

Who Benefited: Freshman class of 2008

Summary: SG’s idea of a yearbook, basically. This bill was sponsored by a substantial proportion of the House – 30 House representatives, when the usual sponsorship is a sad party of one – and led to 6,000 copies of a tradition-building “Owl Book” full of FAU history, fun facts, photos from major events, and information about campus services and activities. The primary justification listed in this bill was, “Traditions help promote community spirit, general welfare, and the advancement of Student Life on campus.”
