While universities across the state are tightening their budget belts, some waistbands are more snug than others. Although FAU is cutting over $9 million beginning July 1 – the start of the new fiscal year – schools like FIU and UF are cutting more than just the dollars.
This month, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees – the 13-member group that oversees decision-making for the university – will determine the fate of nearly 17 degree programs that are at risk of being eliminated. Over the next three years, FIU will cut close to $35 million and nearly 200 faculty and staff positions.
At the University of Florida, the Board of Trustees has already approved a $47 million budget cut. With nearly 52,000 students – the highest enrolled public university in the state – UF plans on reducing enrollment by 1,000 students each year for the next four years.
Fortunately for us, FAU is still able to make ends meet without slashing nearly as much. Vice President for Finance Ken Jessell says that FAU is planning on maintaining enrollment, not cutting it. Although programs aren’t downsizing considerably like they are at FIU, class sizes are increasing and class availability is becoming scarce.
As you take a look through the issue and realize that cuts are being made all across the board – from construction projects to Student Government – remember that right now, there is no better state university to be going to than FAU. While we may take them for granted, we still have some faculty to teach us, classrooms to learn in, and campuses to walk on daily. Anywhere else, you may not have those luxuries.
