Combining musical genres sometimes has disastrous results, but for Apocalyptica, something truly beautiful and terrifyingly awing has been created in their new album, “Worlds Collide.”
The Finnish band originated in the ’90s after the group started performing covers of various metal songs for clubs and events. The band put their own spin on the music, however, by playing each song using a mix of cellos and drums.
The music on Worlds Collide is heavy metal, but without the loud growl rock vocals or guitars. The cellos lend a classical, cataclysmic air to the music, making tracks such as “Worlds Collide” and “Lost Hope” absolutely epic.
Most heavy metal is a constant barrage of loud, fast hardcore music with no breaks. Apocalyptica, however, plays like an orchestra, where the slow and elegant is blended with the hard metal seamlessly.
The cellists play their instruments with a passion and make their cellos sound both angelic and demonic in the same track. They mix normal playing of the instrument while, in the same song, tap their bows along the strings and pick the strings by hand to create those two unique sounds.
Apocalyptica often works with other groups; Till Lindemann, the lead vocalist for popular German industrial metal band Rammstein, sings on “Helden,” while Slipknot’s Corey Taylor lends his voice in “I’m Not Jesus.”
“Worlds Collide” can be purchased through Amazon.com and iTunes for $10.99 and $11.99, respectively.
