The 6-year-old Florida Gulf Coast Eagles baseball team defeated the FAU Owls in extra innings in the team’s first-ever meeting.
Eagles’ freshman pitcher Chris Sale earned the victory by holding the Owls to one run and three hits, striking out six and walking one through the final four innings.
Owls senior pitcher Brett Cannon allowed two runs in the top of the ninth, blowing the save opportunity and allowing the Eagles to tie the game. Owls’ senior pitcher Brandon Kloess allowed a two-run homer to Eagles first baseman Jason Peacock in the 11th and was credited with the loss after the Owls failed to tie it in their half of the inning.
“That was a tough one,” said senior third baseman Daniel Cook, who played his longest outing since he fouled a pitch off his right foot, breaking it, back in a March 14 home game against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Cook played third base and hit in the eighth spot in the order, going 0-1 with two walks and one run scored. “I felt good. It got a little sore towards the end of the game so the trainer wanted to take me out. I’ll be going all out for the conference games this weekend,” said Cook.
Senior pitcher Chris Eberhart pitched his longest outing in his collegiate career in what was his last start at FAU Stadium. The final home game of the season is Sunday.
Eberhart left with a 4-2 lead. He allowed six hits and struck out three and walked one in six innings. He was credited with another no decision, keeping his record 0-0 on the season.
The Eagles improved to 6-2 in extra inning games on the season and the Owls fell to 0-2 in extra inning games on the season.
Florida Gulf Coast improved to 34-13 overall. The Owls fell to 26-22. FAU faces Arkansas State in a three game conference series over the weekend in head coach Kevin Cooney’s final home games after 21 years at the helm. The first game starts Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
