Four decades and 21 studio albums later, power pop group Sparks will release their new album, “Exotic Creatures of the Deep.” Despite a catalog dating back 38 years and a few more misses than hits, their music is surprisingly relevant and fun.
All Sparks songs, regardless of decade or genre, resemble Queen’s opera-rock anthems. Hell, Sparks influenced Queen. “Exotic” is no different. Every song is layered with looped vocals, light piano pecks, and choruses of “ahs” and “ums.” Admittedly, this can be routine (skip tracks like “Strange Animal” and “Photoshop” for this reason) but overall, the album’s repeats seem more inviting than boring.
The first released single, “Lighten Up, Morrissey,” aside from the brilliant title, is the operatic story of a man who can’t get a girl because Morrissey, The Smiths’ lead singer, is “too damn depressing.” “This is the Renaissance” is another track notable for its wit and humor on the pronunciation of certain English words.
Tracks “Good Morning” and “(She Got Me) Pregnant” are electro-power pop at their best. Complete with ABBA-esque pop elements, pounding drum intros and symphonic violins, the repetition becomes its own instrument – and one that’s great for dancing.
