BEST SHOW TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOUR OWN PROBLEMS Desperate Housewives By Amanda Leth Staff Writer
The visit from the annoying mother-in-law is a storyline that has been overplayed since the I Love Lucy days, but somehow Housewives finds a way to keep it entertaining. Susan gets so sick of her mother-in-law she fakes a premature birth by spilling club soda on the floor and pretending that her water broke – at least it’s original.
In the end, Susan finally has her beautiful baby boy. Housewives skipped over the long, drawn out birthing scene – thank god.
Lynette loses it and slaps her borderline sociopathic step-daughter in public – that was a mistake. Naturally the step-daughter calls the family therapists and exaggerates the entire incident.
Everyone can say goodbye to Edie Britt’s clever comments and witty insults, because the ladies of Wisteria Lane have banished her, after she tried to blackmail Bree.
Desperate Housewives airs on ABC Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. To catch up on old episodes anytime go to abc.com.
BEST CD FOR YOUR TEENAGE ANGSTBe Your Own Pet! Get AwkwardBy Michael Trimboli Staff Writer
If there was ever a way a college student could rehash their teenage years again, it’s by listening to Be Your Own Pet!’s (BYOP) new album, Get Awkward.
The Tennessee punk rock band’s sophomore effort builds momentum through antisocial lyrics and teenage angst, plowing through the short but effective 29 minutes of music.
Get Awkward‘s lyrics sound like they originated from the tormented pages of a high school diary. And indeed, 20-year-old lead vocalist Pearl wrote all the words, telling stories of parties, relationships gone awry, crushes and loud-mouthed prep girls.
At times, the band produced slightly racy material (something about homicide and suicide – nothing too offensive, really) and changes were made to the album’s domestic release. So, three songs didn’t make final cut – “Becky”, “Black Hole” and “Blow Your Mind” were axed by BYOP’s label Universal for carrying vulgar lyrics.
Like most punk music, fast-tempo tracks like “Bummer Time”, “Food Fight”, and “Twisted Nerve” have no real common ground, unless they spur you to throw on a pair of tight, ripped, faded blue jeans and crowd surf while at a concert.
Embodying youthful energy and rebellion, each song is sometimes disjointed. “Bummer Time” begins with a slow-building cacophony that explodes into a frenzy of guitars, drums, and vocals. Then Pearl’s powerful voice takes the reins, leading the band through the frantic lyrics.
If you’re buying “Get Awkward,” do order the $8.99 UK release from Amazon.com for those three extra songs Universal removed.
