I’ve been pretty positive about light gun shooters for the Wii lately; over the last few weeks, the University Press highly recommended both Ghost Squad and House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return.
Now, Konami is getting in on the fun with Target: Terror, a deliciously old-school shooter from Eugene Jarvis, the man behind such arcade classics as Robotron 2084, Defender and the Cruis’n series of racers.
And when we say Target: Terror is old school, we mean it. The graphics are mid-’90s vintage at best, with digitized “actors” comprising the people you shoot at and the civilians that, well, you gotta avoid shooting.
Luckily enough, the gameplay is the right kind of old school, as the enemies swarm at you in droves, the challenge level is average-difficult, and the levels are varied. (Airports, nuclear power plants and the Golden Gate Bridge, oh my!) All of ’em are under siege by the enemies. It’s great fun.
And boy, does it have fantastic, unintentional humor. Weapon pickups include a freeze gun, an orbital space laser and even an electric bolt called “The Shocker.” Yeah, you read right: “The Shocker.” Death animations are also ridiculously over-the-top. The game doesn’t take itself seriously, and neither should you. That’s the charm of it.
