BEST CD TO ROCK OUTBetween the Buried and Me, Colorsby Michael Trimboli Staff Writer
Schizophrenic is the best way to describe Between the Buried and Me’s fifth and most recent album, Colors.
Don’t get me wrong – this isn’t a bad thing. The band is a musical prism of sorts, breaking apart their songs into a multitude of various musical styles. Soft, pleasant-sounding singing over light keyboard notes opens the album, followed by a melody of keyboards, guitars and drums, which then drop into the fiery depths of hardcore metal. Loud, roaring singing combined with hardcore guitar riffs, furiously fast drums and some crazy keyboards set the tone for Colors.
Between the Buried and Me is classified as a “mathcore” band: a genre derived from metalcore and normally involves “technical guitar work, high-ranged vocals, and off time-signatures,” according to UrbanDictionary.com.
Between the Buried and Me uses System of a Down’s playbook at times by switching from loud and crazy thrashing to a melodic, seemingly stable sense of being.
One could say that this genre of music is not about the vocals or the instruments, but it’s a culmination of the two fighting for dominance rather than harmony.
This band does, however, have a style all its own. The awesome riffs, hardcore growl singing, crazy fast songs and the band’s mind-shatteringly good sound all lead to a final, 14-minute track that’s icing on the cake. Pure awesome.
