On the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, senior Mike Prysner wants to make sure FAU students are aware of its significance.
“We’re constantly building a movement for change,” Prysner says. “That’s why we’re having the rally.”
On Wednesday, March 19, Prysner – who is a state coordinator for the Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER) coalition of Florida – will take over the Free Speech Lawn from noon until 2 p.m. for the End the War Now! rally. Pysner and his ANSWER group hopes the rally makes students aware of how the Iraq War has changed the world.
According to Prysner’s Facebook event posting, nearly one million Iraqis and 4,000 U.S. troops have been killed since the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003. Paying for the war is also in high numbers.
“The cost of the war is now running at more than $400 million per day, nearly $5,000 per second,” says the Facebook event, also noting that the money used on the war could be generating health care, housing and employment instead.
Besides speaking during the rally himself, Prysner says that the Peace Studies department will also be on hand for a sticker campaign – a sticker for each fallen soldier will be given out. Along with that, the groups will be passing out literature to inform students about the history and the possible future the Iraq War will bring us.
The FAU and state ANSWER coalition are sponsoring the event.
