The FAU women’s basketball team snapped a three game losing streak on Saturday by defeating Columbia 74-58 at the Burrow but fell to St. Bonaventure 78-72 on Sunday.
“I was pleased with the overall performance,” said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. “I thought we took a big step between last week and this week.”
Against Columbia the Owls had four players who scored in double-figures led by Breanna Cox’s 16 points, and Carla Stubbs’ 14 points. Also contributing for the Owls was Jaimie Givens with 13 points and Adel Lizama with 11 points.
“We worked a lot on our offense and I think we executed pretty well,” Dugan said.
Cox posted a career high in scoring as FAU’s bench out scored Columbia’s 28-16.
“Really I thought our bench did a great job for us,” Dugan said. “I thought that everybody that did play did a good job.”
Overall FAU had a better-than-normal performance offensively, shooting a season high 46.8 percent from the floor. Entering the game, FAU was shooting 35.2 percent this season.
Columbia also had four players in double figures. Chelsea Frazier and Danielle Browne had 12 points each. Browne was six for six from the floor.
Holding Columbia to 31 percent shooting from the floor, Dugan was pleased that her team played together well defensively, but wants more consistency.
“I like our defensive intensity and we just got to keep it up for all forty minutes,” said Dugan.
The Owls had hoped to create a winning streak, but fell short against St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The Owls were led by Brittany Bowe’s 18 points, and Breanna Cox’s 16 points. Cox added three blocked shots. Both Bowe and Cox were named to the FAU Holiday Classic all-tournament team, with Cox being named tournament MVP.
St. Bonaventure had four players scoring in double figures led by Dana Mitchell’s 21 points, and Andrea Doneth with 19 points.
FAU fell to 2-5 and will to try get back on track as they host Eastern Michigan this Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Burrow on the Boca campus.
